Walter Reed Mellott, 76, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2020 in Cheyenne. He was born to Roger Wilmer and Olla Engle Mellott on December 25, 1943 in Everett, PA. Walter married Catherine McNamara on April 29, 1967 at Warren AFB Chapel. He served 22 years in the United States Air Force. Walter was stationed in Arkansas, Cheyenne, Montana, Texas, Utah, Okinawa Japan, Virginia, Iceland, and finally back in Cheyenne where he retired. He also served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam.
After retiring from the military, he was an aviation instructor for Cheyenne Aero Tech for 14 years. He then worked at Great Lakes Aviation as a Tech Writer for 7 years. Walter also volunteered for 22 years at the Veterans Administration in the Extended Living Facility as well as 10 years for Meals on Wheels.
When asked what his dream job would be, Walter replied Air Rescue during his tours in Vietnam and in Iceland. "There is no better satisfaction in this world I know than to see the thankfullness of someone's life saved. It is the most awesome feeling to know you helped in that mission."
Walter loved the outdoors including fishing, hunting, and camping. He was also an avid woodworker and an accomplished poet having written over 3,000 poems.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Dulcie (Rich) Armstrong, Doreen (Kelly) Judd, sons Chris (Niki) Mellott, and Joshua (Amanda) Mellott, brothers Barry (Beulah) Mellott and Randy Jay (Lucille) Mellott, sister-in-law Mae Mellott, nine grandchildren, and six + great-grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leroy Mellott and Eugene Mellott and sister-in-law Joan Swope.
Services will be held at North Christian Church on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 10:00 am. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 7:00 pm on Monday, January 6, 2020 at Weiderspahn-Radomsky Chapel.
