Max Bates, 89, of Cheyenne, died on August 17, 2022 in Cheyenne.
He was born on November 25, 1932 in Alton, Kansas.
After finishing his schooling, he entered the U.S. Air Force in January of 1953, and was assigned to the "Sam Fox" squadron in Washington, D.C. The "Sam Fox" squadron was a special air missions unit in existence for direct operations of Air Force One. While there he met his wife, Mary, who was working at the Pentagon. They were married in December of 1956 in the Army chapel in Ft. Meyer, Virginia.
After 11 years with "Sam Fox", he completed other worldwide assignments before retiring from the U. S. Air Force at FEWAFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Upon retirement from the U.S. Air Force he became a real estate broker and practiced locally for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Douglas Bates (Lisa) and Jason Bates; and three grandchildren, Jordan Bates (Kara), Megan DeBruyn (Mark), and Austin Bates; one sister, Lucy Lea Murray; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Sharon Malcom; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Elva Bates, and his siblings.
