Walter W Main

September 14, 1931 — October 14, 2019

Mr. Walter W. Main, Jr., age 88, husband of Gayle W. Main, and a resident of Laramie, WY, passed away Monday, October 14, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.
Born September 14, 1931 in Quincy, Massachusetts, Walter, or “Buzz” as he was known to so many, was the son of the late Walter W. Main, Sr., and Marion (Flanders) Main.
Being unsure of his next step after graduating from Quincy High School, he encountered a traffic cop by the name of Officer McDonough who told him, in no uncertain terms, to visit the local recruiting center. As a result of this chance encounter, he joined the Air Force and served his country for more than three years. Buzz then attended Boston University, earning his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations. He was then introduced to Gayle Lunetta at a family party and was immediately smitten. Walter set to work to win her hand, and they married on June 8, 1957 and remained happily married for 58 years. He worked faithfully as a salesman for Carter Rice Storrs & Bement paper company before retiring after 37 years of service.
Walter and Gayle were founding members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in East Longmeadow, MA where he served various positions on the vestry and tended to the grounds. Walter had a great talent for making people laugh, even having a book of his favorite jokes published (new print coming soon). He was an avid Patriots fan and loved to golf. After playing third base for the Air Force team, he continued his love for the game as a coach for the local sports teams where he spent countless hours making a huge difference in the lives of his children and the children of East Longmeadow.
Buzz also greatly enjoyed being outdoors, spending time at yardwork and gardening. Their home was a gathering place for many church and family events. In his later years, Walter was a passionate cribbage player and also enjoyed playing Bingo, Yahtzee and Rummy, which he called “Sevens” and watching his favorite classic movies.
Walter is survived by his children: David Main of Murfreesboro, TN, Linda Main of Charlotte, NC, Scott Main of Laramie, WY, Donald (Valerie) Main of Nashville, TN and Julie (Tim) Dryden of Cheyenne, WY; Sister-In-Law: Kathleen (Lloyd) Emery of Hull, MA; Brother-in-Law David Lunetta of Plymouth, MA and Grandchildren: Jeffrey Main, Ryan Main, Samantha Kniss, and Graisen Kniss.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Gayle Main; parents Walter and Marion Main; sister Marion (Donald) Lunetta and brother Samuel (Gloria) Main; Brother-in-laws Warren (Ellie) Main and Paul Lunetta.
A Celebration of Life service will be held during the summer of 2020 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Details will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of all the years Walter spent caring for his loving wife, Gayle.
