Velma Shepherd, 98, passed away Thursday, October 29th in Cheyenne.
Velma is survived by three children, Kathryn Westfall Kalen, Nancy Graves and Neil Shepherd; sister, Ruth McBride; sister-in-law, Delia Kalinski; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was born May 19, 1917 in Huntley, Nebraska. Velma graduated from Huntley High School and went on to pursue a career as an elementary teacher. Her first teaching assignment was in Maywood, Nebraska, where she met Cecil Shepherd. They were married December 1941, later moving to Hastings, Nebraska.
During her later years, Velma was an avid Nebraska “Cornhusker” fan. She kept up with the Colorado “Rockies” and the Denver “Broncos” as well.
Velma was an accomplished seamstress, baker, and exceptional homemaker. During the summer she enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, which were a profusion of color. During the winter, she was an avid reader as well as an accomplished creator of afghans which, as with her flower gardens, were a profusion of color and design. Each of her children and grandchildren’s families have several of her handmade afghans. These treasures are and will remain to be a cozy reminder of her love for them.
Cremation has taken place.
