Stephen J. Brown, 79, of Cheyenne, died August 24th after a heroic battle with chronic illness. He was born 1939 in Oakland, CA. After moving to Cheyenne at the age of six and graduating from Cheyenne High, he had an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1962. Returning to Cheyenne, he joined the Cheyenne Police Department, and retired as a sergeant, specializing as a Crime Scene Investigator. Later he also worked for the Laramie County Sheriff's Department. Professional accomplishments include serving as an instructor at the Wyoming Police Academy, teaching at the FBI Academy in Philadelphia and receiving the Wyoming Peace Officer of the year award in the early 1980's.
On October 2, 1963, he married the love of his life, Clarice G. Fennel. Steve has four children, Wendy Clauson, Susan Payne, Nancy Waller and Stephen K. Brown. He has twelve surviving grandchildren, and twelve great- grandchildren. He was a collector of arrowheads, rocks, railroad date nails, barbed wire and insulators. He loved teaching photography at LCCC, telling jokes and stories, and welcoming people into his home. He will be dearly missed, but his gifts of love, laughter and life shall always remain.
