Ron Sutherland passed away Friday, January 12, 2024, at Davis Hospice in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He was the son of Kenneth A. Sutherland and May E. King/Sutherland and was born May 10, 1933 in Cheyenne.
They lived at Granite Canon, Wyoming until 1937 when the family moved to Cheyenne to go into the automobile business.
Ron attended Cheyenne schools and graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1951. While in school he enjoyed all sports, especially football, playing all three years in high school. Afterward he attended the University of Wyoming.
In 1953 he entered the Army and returned to Wyoming in1955. He was a member of the American Legion.
Ron married Mary Lee Cozadd and they raised four children.
He worked for Dynalectron for ten years in Cheyenne and in 1964 made a career move to Wycon Chemical Company. Wycon changed their name to Coastal Chem. Ron devoted 30 years to the company marketing and selling both agriculture and industrial nitrogen base products throughout the United States. During his career with Coastal Chem, Ron held numerous management positions, retiring as the President of Marketing. Once retired from Coastal Chem he served on the Board of Directors of Apache Nitrogen an Arizona Corporation.
Ron and Mary Lee raised registered sheep for years. They showed and sold Hampshire and Rambouillet sheep in the United States and Mexico. Ron served on the Board of Directors, as Vice President and President of the American Rambouillet Breeders Association. He enjoyed the genetic challenges of breeding and was one of the first breeders to implement the use of DNA testing and Ultrasound technology to evaluate carcass values in their registered Rambouillet flock.
Being a devoted 4H leader, Ron started the Cheyenne Wrangler 4H Club along with Sam Field. Enjoying working with youth groups, he demonstrated fitting and showing techniques at clinics throughout Wyoming and developed a video for the Rambouillet Association's junior members. In Recognition for his devotion and expertise he received an Honorary Degree from the National FFA association at the national meeting in Kansas City. Ron and Mary Lee also hosted college judging teams at their ranch preparing the teams for the Denver Stock Show. In addition, husband and wife provided sheep for LCCC's show team, competing at the Denver Stock Show along with the Arizona National Stock Show.
Ron also served on the Business and Agriculture Advisory Committees for Laramie County Community College.
Being a passionate supporter of University of Wyoming athletics, Ron held season tickets for many years and was a longtime member of the Cheyenne Quarter Back Club.
Survived by wife Mary Lee. Children: Susan, Tammy, Mark (Rhonda) and Rick. Grandchildren: Melissa, Matthew, Mason (Morgan), Mackenzy, Clint, Carsen, Caitlin (Eric) and Sebastian. Great grandchildren: Makayla, Hailey, Savannah, Mia, Max, Mavrik, Quincy and Emmett.
Proceeded in death by his parents, brother Kenny, nephew Ron A. and grandson Christopher.
