Robert passed away May 7, 2018 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was born the third child of Robert R.B. and Lola Ann (Bowles) Grenwelge in Houston, Texas on September 24, 1953. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church and confirmed at Advent Lutheran Church, where all of his family were charter members. After graduating from Scarborough High School, he attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, attaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. He married Diane Mueller (Garrett) in 1982, and they were blessed with one daughter, Erin.
Robert worked at the Communicable Disease Division of the City of Houston for over 11 years, rising to the rank of Administration Manager. He was subsequently hired by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2001, Robert transferred to the Wyoming Department of Health Immunization Unit as a Public Health Advisor, where he met Debra (DeWitt) Hamilton. He and Debra married in 2014, retired in 2015 and began their life as Texas snowbirds, returning to Cheyenne during the summer.
Robert was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed watching the University of Texas Longhorns, Sam Houston State Bearkats, and the Houston Texans. He loved to cook all varieties of cuisine and to host his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Debra, his beloved daughter Erin (and husband Bobby) Leshikar, stepdaughter Krista (and husband Tyler “TJ”) Barttelbort and stepson Justyn Hamilton; sisters Lynn (and husband Gary) Schroeder and Kathie (and husband Howard) Klare, brother Bill (and wife Lise) Grenwelge; aunts Del Hendricks and Beverly (and husband Cecil) Anderson, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and innumerable friends and family members who will miss his quick wit, sense of humor, and his calm, patient manner.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ann.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life is planned at Ascension Lutheran Church in Cheyenne on May 19 at 11:00 AM, as well at Advent Lutheran Church in Houston on May 26 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Davis Hospice Center, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or charity of choice.
