Robert (Bob) Barnes, 87, passed away, on December 7, 2016, in Loveland, Colorado.
Robert, son of the late Oscar and Alma (Thompson) Barnes, was born April 10, 1929, in Greeley, Colorado. He receive a high school diploma from Nunn High School in 1946, then went on to attend the Presbyterian College in Hastings, Nebraska, for one year. He was married to Era Sidwell, of Nunn, Colorado, from 1948-1971. He then married Marion Gill of Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1972.
Surviving family members are: David (Rebecca) Barnes of Eaton CO, Kathleen Barnes of Mesa AZ, Linda (Douglas) Anderson of Kingsville, MO and Michele (Jeff) Caird of Calgary, Canada. Grandchildren: David (Lynea) Barnes, Kristen(Jay) O’Neil, Nicholas Beveridge, Shawn (Tanya) Beveridge, Kevin Wallis, Crystal (Gabriel) Wilkerson, Clinton Wallis, Hanna Caird, Alex Caird, and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Barnes.
As a young man, Bob worked a variety of jobs to support his young family who lived on the original Barnes homestead in Nunn. He was a construction worker for the water diversion tunnel to the eastern slope, sugar beet factory worker, hauler for coal and scrap metal collection. His true passion, and lifetime career, was dryland wheat farming. Initially, he worked with his father Oscar, then branched off independently. As Barnes Farms grew, he added custom combining. His final farming venture was organic wheat farming in Lodgepole, Nebraska.
Bob enjoyed traveling, taking pictures, snow skiing and good food. He rarely missed an opportunity to show his historic slides or to attend a cousin’s reunion. He was an integral founder of the Northern Drylanders Museum that helped to preserve the history in the community that he loved.
His memberships were: The First Presbyterian Church of Nunn, Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association, board of directors 1959-1983, Centennial Tractor Club and The Northern Drylanders Museum.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Friday, May 26, 2017 at the Nunn Community Center 185 Lincoln Ave, Nunn Colorado, at 1:00 p.m.
