Rita Walker

July 30, 1938 — March 22, 2024

Rita Rae Walker, a beloved mother, real estate professional and true Wyoming spirit passed away peacefully on November 18, 2023. Born on July 30, 1938 in Cheyenne, WY, she was the daughter of Pearl (DeGraw) Barrington McKinney and Stephen Barrington. From the very beginning it was clear that she was a force to be reckoned with. Raised in Cheyenne, Rita developed a love for wide open spaces, rugged landscapes, and the thrill of the rodeo. She attended Cheyenne High School in Cheyenne and was a voracious reader. She was married to William Ray Walker in 1961. Rita and Bill welcomed twin boys, William and Stephen Walker in 1962. “The Twins” were a great source of pride for Rita. She enjoyed showing them off whenever she could. Rita was a realtor with her family firm, Barrington Realty, and served as President of the Cheyenne Board of Realtors in 1985, earning the title of Realtor of the Year in 1987. She enjoyed camping in her “Old Blue” RV, bowling, or a rowdy game of cards with her family and she especially enjoyed watching bull riding. She embraced the cowboy spirit with enthusiasm attending rodeos and celebrating the unique culture that defines Wyoming. Later in life she traveled annually with her sister, Karen, to watch championship events all over the West while on their famed “Thelma and Louise” trips. Rita had a soft spot for pets and always had her beloved -cats and dogs through the years. She was an active member and past president of the Cancer Assistance Association, organizing events to raise funds to help those afflicted with cancer and their families. Rita was always true to herself and very loyal. She had a big heart for her family and a great sense of humor. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved being part of a large group of first cousins and was very close to many of them, attending reunions and staying in touch via visits, phone calls and online communications. She spent her last years at her home, under the good care of her friend and wonderful caretaker, Mary Gadlin. We miss Rita’s spunk and sass and keen wit. She was preceded in death by her father Stephen James Barrington; mother Pearl Barrington McKinney; sister Janice Edwards; sister Karen Tucker; and husband, Bill Walker. She is survived by her sons Stephen C. Walker and William P. Walker (Toonie); and three grandchildren: Adele Barrington Walker, Gabrielle Lewis Walker and William Stephen Walker. Rita’s family will hold a gathering on July 27th to celebrate her life. Location TBD. In memory of Rita, please consider donations in Rita’s name to The Cheyenne Animal Shelter.
