Elmer Wilhelm, 93, formerly of Cheyenne, died on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 in Omaha, Nebraska.
He was born on June 16, 1923 in Omaha. The family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where he attended school until the family then moved to Denver in 1938. He attended North High in Denver, graduating in 1942. He worked in the freight office for D.N.R.G. Rail road and was drafted into the Army in 1943. He served as a supply sergeant for the Army Air Corps in India during the War against Japan. He served until November 1945. He was honorably discharged and went to work again in the freight office.
He married Esther Guenther, April 28th 1946. Elmer went to Yankton Seminary College, where he graduated and was ordained in Alpena, South Dakota in 1950. Reverend Wilhelm served churches in Alpena and Wessington, South Dakota, for eight years. In June of 1959, he accepted a call to Zion Congregational church in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he served until 1963. In August of 1963, Rev. WIlhelm was called to serve the Greeley Congregational Church in Colorado. He served the Greeley church until 1973. Rev. Wilhelm then accepted God's call to serve the Laurel Congregational, Church in Laurel, Montana until his retirement in 1989. He and Esther moved back to his home church in Cheyenne, where he served until his ill health forced them to move to Wichita, Kansas, to be near his daughter. Elmer is survived by his wife, Esther, of Wichita; sister, Elaine Stricker of Denver; son, Ted Wilhelm of Olathe, Kansas; daughter, Yvonne Adamson of Wichita; and many other friends and relatives too numerous to mention.
Services will be Saturday, 2:00 p.m., at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel.
Interment will be in Beth El Cemetery.
