Raymond Charles Lansing

December 13, 1935 — December 12, 2022

Raymond Charles Lansing, 87, of Cheyenne, passed away at Cottonwood Creek Memory Facility on December 12, 2022.
He was born on September 13, 1935, in Petersburg, NE to Charles & Margaret Lansing.
He attended school at Dalton Public schools in Nebraska and attended St. Patrick’s Academy in Sydney, NE. He moved to Torrington where he attended High School and also studied at the University of Wyoming. He began a radio career as an announcer at KGOS radio in Torrington. He moved to Thermopolis to broadcast sports at KRTR radio. He moved to Cheyenne in 1957 where he worked at KFBC radio and television. He later worked for a local advertising agency and eventually started his own advertising public relations business where he had many local advertising accounts, several trade associations and was the director of the National Federal of Independent Business. He had a very successful business and was greatly involved in the community serving in his church, St. Mary’s, as a lector and Eucharistic minister, President of the Cheyenne Quarterback Club and served on the Board of Directors of Memorial Hospital. In 2005, he was honored by his fellow broadcasters and was inducted into the Wyoming Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
For many years, Ray was the voice of the Wyoming Cowboys, doing play by play for the football and basketball teams with his sidekick, Larry Birleffi, and with his buddy Kevin McKinney for one of those years. He had a golden voice. Ray hosted several radio programs, including the Big Band Sound program ‘Dancing with Lansing’, and Grier Music Hall. Early in his career in television, he was also Captain 5 on KGWN TV. His voice was known to many in Cheyenne as the voice of Tyrell Chevrolet and Grier Furniture.
Ray loved playing golf, watching the Broncos, going to all of his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and taking his family camping and fishing.
After his retirement in 1996, he went to a morning coffee group which still meets. His good friend, Dave Johnson, picked him up faithfully every Monday morning over the past couple of years, so he was able to join in the fun and laughter this group provided.
In June of 1956, he married Dorothy Strecker of Huntley, WY. For 66 years, Ray and Dorothy had a wonderful life together raising six children, Valerie (Rick) Rothwell of Cheyenne; Laura (Byron) Grott of Cheyenne; Ray (Angie) Lansing of Bend, OR; Jeff (Georgia) Lansing of Delta Junction, Alaska; David (Stephanie) Lansing of Hyattsville, Maryland and Jennifer (Ryan) White of Sheridan, WY. He loved his grandchildren, Randy & Craig Rothwell, Lacy (Tom) Hall, Lindsay Bugas, Kyle Grott, Lucy Lansing, Quinn and Gavin Lansing, Anthony Lansing, and Finley White. He also had the privilege of having four great grandchildren, Aubrey & Blake Bugas and Aubrey and Hayden Hall.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Tom Lansing, and sister Marjorie Kissel.
Ray will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends for his faith in God, good sense of humor, kindness, Rick Barry free throws during the family basketball games, his world famous ‘Mailbox Shot’, and his love of popcorn, ice cream and donuts.
Contributions may be made to Saint Joseph’s Children’s Home in Torrington, Box 1117, Torrington, WY 82240, in memory of Ray. He and his family lived at the home for several years.
