Phyllis Lucille Rizzuto Hughes passed away peacefully in her home Saturday, holding her daughter’s hand, with family and friends at her side.
She was born May 11, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York to Peter and Angelina Rizzuto. The family moved to Cheyenne when Phyllis was 10 years old, and Cheyenne has been her home since that time. After graduating from Cheyenne High School in 1945, Phyllis worked as a secretary to the Medical Director at the Veterans Administration in Cheyenne. She married Jack D. Hughes on July 15, 1950. Phyllis stayed at home, a loving mother and wife, to raise their three children.
Survivors include her children Jacqueline Whitehead (Neil), John Hughes (Janet), both of Cheyenne, and Donald Hughes (Glenda) of Weeping Water, Nebraska, her five grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, her parents, a sister Mary, and an infant brother John.
Phyllis was a loving, kind spirit. She enjoyed cooking, shopping, gardening, and had a busy life enjoying her children, grandchildren, and many friends. Phyllis loved to travel, often to the places in which her sons and grandchildren were living for visits, and to visit relatives. She and her daughter visited many places, her favorite being a trip to her birthplace and neighborhood in Brooklyn, and a wonderful trip to Italy. Phyllis loved to bowl in her earlier years, winning many trophies. Wii bowling became second best. She enjoyed completing many jigsaw puzzles, and crocheted many afghans for her family.
A Timeless Memories Service will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Wiederspahn-Radomksy Chapel. Please join the family immediately after the services at her daughter Jackie’s home for a Celebration of her Life, 1218 Silver Spur Road.
