Patrick T. Tyrrell, 67, of Cheyenne, passed away at the Davis Hospice Center on September 28, 2024. He was born in Cheyenne on July 11, 1957, to Thomas and Dorothy (Dewey) Tyrrell.
Pat graduated from the University of Wyoming with degrees in Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Before retiring in April 2019, he was the longest serving State Engineer in Wyoming history, serving under four governors. He continued supporting clients with his western water expertise through Tyrrell Resources until his illness this past summer.
In 2016 Pat was selected as the Wyoming Eminent Engineer by the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society at the University of Wyoming. In the fall of 2018, he and his wife Barbara endowed the Patrick and Barbara Tyrrell Engineering Scholarship for single-parent students or students from single-parent homes, also at UW. Last year, Pat was inducted into the Wyoming College of Engineering and Physical Sciences Hall of Fame.
An avid fly fisherman, Pat tied flies and built fishing rods for his friends. He loved bird hunting with his dogs and enjoyed his annual salmon fishing trip to Alaska. He was a skilled woodworker who enjoyed inviting friends into his shop. Pat was an emeritus member of the Cheyenne Young Men’s Literary Club.
Pat is survived by his wife, Barbara Tyrrell, stepson Michael O’Bryant and daughter-in-law Kayleigh, and granddaughters Laura and Allie. He is also survived by his mother, Dorothy Tyrrell, and his sister, Gaylene Thomas (Tyrrell) and her husband, Jim, as well as their children Ty, Kyle, Cole, Kaya, and Alayna. He was preceded in death by his father.
