Norman H. “Duke” Rhoades, 81, of Cheyenne, passed away on July 22, 2014 in Cheyenne.
Duke was born on July 29, 1932 in Reed’s Spring, MO to William and Bertha Rhoades. He was one of 9 children. At age 17, Duke joined the Army. He fought in the Korean War and was honorably discharged after 3 years.
He married Billie Sue Quick on September 24, 1955. They had 4 children, all born in Missouri.
Duke worked as a driver for Greyhound Bus Lines for 25 years. The family moved to Wyoming in 1969. In 1981 Duke and Sue started Wyoming Tent and Awning. Eventually all family members became a part of the Company which ran successfully for 21 years. After selling the Tent Company, Duke worked for Star Aggregates Construction Co., for six years, driving a belly dump truck. He just could not bring himself to be retired, he always worked to take care of his family since he was in the 8th grade.
Duke’s loves are his wife, his family, his mule, Jake, his dog, Sooner, his horses, Annie and Kate, his home on the prairie, hunting and his country.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Rhoades; children, Sammie (Phil) Ridinger, Jeff (Jodee) Rhoades, Jon (Denise) Rhoades, Luke (Sheila) Rhoades, grandchildren, Jaime Wiggam, Mike Rhoades, Jessica Streeter, Wes Ridinger, Quentin Ridinger, and numerous great grandchildren. They will all miss him more than words can say.
A Life Commemoration Service will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel. Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
