Mattye Douglas Brooks departed this life Monday, October 4, 2021, peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones at the blessed age of 92.
Mattye Mae was born December 22, 1928 in Eudora, AR to Henry Douglas and Nancy Steele. She was the youngest of three sisters Franke, Heles and adopted sister Frances.
After graduating from high school at the age of 16, Mattye moved to Cheyenne, WY. She joined Second Baptist Church upon her arrival in 1946. She was an active member, faithfully serving in many capacities.
On June 20, 1955, Mattye married Richard Brooks, and they were blessed with four daughters; Joyce Sanders; Karen Rochelle Brooks-Lyons (Lance); Vannette Brooks; Mercedes Brooks-Hunt (James) all of Cheyenne. They blessed her with nine grandchildren; Demetrius Brooks (Sarah), Vancouver, WA; Roberto Jackson (Regina), Ft. Collins, CO; Pastor Warnell Brooks (Talia), Antioch, CA; Minister JaQuale Mattye Brooks-Richardson (Devon), Colorado Springs, CO; Zanyaille Lyons, Cheyenne; Gregory Lyons (Tabatha), Aragon, GA; Jamille Jackson (Solomon), Alamogordo, NM; Keven Brown, Murfreesboro, TN; and Michael Brown also of Cheyenne. The blessings continued with 15 great grandchildren plus one on the way Keaton, Miesha, Amiah, Mehkai, Aaliyah, JaKirah, Ariana, Zayden, Tyler, Jaden, Layah, Ayden, JaKayah, Jalen, and Anaja. One great-great grandson Grayson.
The love she had for her daughters went beyond them and flowed to her nieces and nephews, Patricia, Martha, Ruthie, Rosie, Marshall, Cookie, Angie, Melvin, Robert, Bobby, Sarah and Jetdean.
Provision for her family was one of her top priorities. She worked at the Geyser Laundry, cleaned houses, was a seamstress at National Furs and Fashion, cleaned restroom at the Frontier Days Pavilion and was a Teacher’s Aide for the school District. In 1972, Mattye attended LCCC and the University of Wyoming, graduating with a BA in Elementary Education in 1977. For the next 17 years she taught 3rd and 4th grade at Churchill and Corlette Elementary School, for LCSD#1, and retired in June of 1995. She enjoyed talking on the phone, fishing, playing scrabble, word searches, and solitaire.
During her 92 years of life, her accomplishments consist of President of the Western States Baptist Convention Women’s Department, Department President of the WY American Legion Auxiliary, President and Secretary of Carter Brown Post 83 Women’s Auxiliary; Pioneer Temple #641 Financial Secretary; Middle western States Association IBPOE of W Chaplain for over 30 years and Grand District Deputy; President of Church Women United; Democratic Women’s Association; Cheyenne Teacher’s Education Association; Retired Teachers Association; Girl Scout Leader; March of Dimes Chairman; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc; Model City and Community Action; and Cheyenne NAACP Branch 4108.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, her three sisters, two nieces and two nephews.
Left to cherish her memories are her four daughters, two sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandson, nieces, nephews, and her first cousins, Rose Lee Price, George Ealey and Georgia Walker and a host of family and friends.
Wake Services will be Thursday, 6:00 p.m., at Second Baptist Church.
Services will be Friday, 1:00 p.m., at Second Baptist Church with burial to follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
