Mary Nell Volk

Mary Nell (Hawthorne) Volk, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025, at the age of 85.

The daughter of the late Tom Walker Hawthorne and Lillian Katherine Hays Hawthorne, Mary Nell spent her childhood in Mineral Springs, Arkansas and was a graduate of Mineral Springs High School in 1957. After graduation, she along with two of her sisters, Betty and Joyce, attended Cosmetology school and worked as hair stylists for a number of years. Mary taught Cosmetology as well. Everyone always enjoyed Mary’s vibrant personality and flair in her personal style. If you knew Mary for any length of time, more than likely a life-long friendship developed. She often would mention that she was praying for someone.

” And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” Ephesians 6:18

Mary Nell was preceded in death by her loving husband, William (Bill) Volk and her son, Glenn Allen Funderburk, and her parents. Mary was the “baby” of the family and her siblings also preceded her in death, two sisters, Betty Jo Ray and Joyce Katherine Nassoy along with three older brothers Donald Ray, Alton (Towdy) LeRoy and Glenn Hayes Hawthorne.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Linda Michelle Lane (Mike) of Cheyenne, Wyoming, daughter-in-law Jenny (Glenn) of McKinney, Texas and son Caleb (Dustin) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Other survivors include her grandchildren, Melissa Roach, Kevin Roach, Keith Roach, Allen Funderburk and Alex Funderburk along with six beloved great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews that she loved deeply.
