It is with truly heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mom and grandma, Mary Ann Furtney. Mary Ann, 83, passed away less than a month before her 84th birthday, on Monday March 10th. 2025 at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. She was born April 5th, 1941, to Marion and Ima (Andrews) Hutton, making her a proud, independent, feisty Aries. She was born in Stratton Colorado and grew up with an older brother, Derrell.
Mary Ann, better known as “Omie” to her grandchildren, was always known for her strength and her ability to get things done. With her outstanding work ethic, Mary Ann was a successful business woman who originally earned her Associates Degree at the University of Northern Colorado. After deciding this was not the path for her, she received her job at the State of Wyoming and worked there for over 40 years. She took pride in her punctuality, attendance and reliability and her actions always proved it.
Although she was wonderful in the workplace, she was even more wonderful with her family, which is how she spent most of her time. We grew up with an extremely close-knit family, Omie being the glue holding everyone together. Being the person who stood beside you during every hardship. Being the one who cheered you on and talked positivity into you on your worst days. She was the one who would give the shirt off her own back just so you didn’t go without. The person you would call to tell the most exciting news to, or the most minor inconvenience. The person you could talk to without judgement or have the best laughs with over the silliest things. She was always there and loved her family unconditionally.
Her grandchildren, specifically, had a way with her. She had such a soft spot for her grandchildren and never missed a chance to tell us how proud of us she was. Her patience and love for us was unmatched. She gave and gave and never expected anything in return. Even into our adult years, she always made sure we knew how much she loved us. She got to meet her first great-grandbaby in 2020, and her second in 2021. Stella Moore and Paislee Moore instantly stole her heart and were the lights of her life since.
Besides being with family, Omie loved being with her dog JoJo. Jojo was there through all her ups and downs, and Omie always swore that she looked like she was smiling at her. They were inseparable and loved sharing a cuddle and a meal. Spending a lot of time in the kitchen, Mary Ann was a great cook. Having dinner at her house every holiday for many years. Her specialties included chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy and corned beef and cabbage, staying true to her Irish roots. She also enjoyed reading, specifically murder mysteries, her favorite author being James Patterson. Omie was an avid sports fan-never missing a game. Hockey, football, and nascar were her favorites. Another of Mary Anns favorite past times was volunteering her time at the Masonic Temple. She was a member of the Harmony Chapter #53 O.E.S. and served in many capacities.
Omie was a woman of few words and enjoyed the simple things in life. She always said, “any day that you get to wake up to the sun shining and the birds chirping, you know it will be a good day.” And that is exactly how she spent her mornings: in her chair with Jojo in the sunlight, listening to the birds chirping, with her notorious hazelnut coffee. I think being one of the most, if not the most, valuable lessons she instilled in us was to be grateful for the little things, along with being kind, always.
Mary Ann is survived by her two daughters Deana Moore (Mike Phillips), Shannon Stewart (Rich), her grandchildren Taylar Moore, Matthew Moore, and Riley Stewart, and her great-grandchildren Stella Moore and Paislee Moore all of Cheyenne Wyoming.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and many friends.
To put into words the absolutely incredible, selfless, pure human she was is an impossible task. To put into words how much she was loved and how much she will be missed is also an impossible task. And although she is no longer with us Earthside, she has and will always have a very special place in our hearts. Her legacy, her voice, and her lessons will live through our family, until we meet again.
A private family celebration will be held at a later date. Lastly, a special thanks to friends and family who have shown their support during this tragic time.
