Marshall E. Smith was born on August 20, 1939 and died in Cheyenne on September 6, 2017. He was the fourth child of J. Edward and Ethel G. Smith.
After graduating from Colorado State University with a degree in mathematics and physics, he worked in computers in Denver, Boston, and Syracuse. He returned to Cheyenne to run the family business, the Cheyenne Steam Laundry, and later The Substitute Family, which provided case management services to failing elders.
“Chef Marshall” loved to cook and entertain, and effortlessly gave parties for hundreds of friends He was a lifelong learner, who read voraciously, and took many classes at LCCC and online. He was a masterful bridge player and successfully solved Sudoku puzzles in ink. He loved to travel and attend cultural events. He was involved in several organizations, including St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, the Friends of the Symphony, Cheyenne Kiwanis club, and the CRMC Respiratory Therapy group. He cheerfully supported his friends’ activities.
Marshall is survived by sons, Edward and John; sister, Carol (Jack) Shafer; several nieces and nephews; and Mary Guthrie and her family. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Flynn; and brother, John Smith.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held later. Memorials can be made to the Music Program of St. Mark’s Episcopal church, the Mary B. Guthrie scholarship at LCCC, CRMC Foundation, the Cheyenne Civic Concert Band, or an organization of one’s choice.
Marshall was a good son, father, and friend. He lived with courage and grace.
