Marlin Edwin Lowry

April 14, 1930 — January 12, 2015

Marlin Edwin Lowry, 84, of Cheyenne died Monday, January 12, 2015. He was born April 14, 1930. After retiring as a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in 1987, Marlin moved to Oman to take his expertise on water issues to the desert. Prior to joining USGS, he also served in the United States Army.
Marlin will always be remembered for teaching others the “elevator dance,” the songs and poetry he recited with considerable enthusiasm, culinary masterpieces (even if inedible), home-made wines known both for the their full-flavor and their ability to re-design a room when the cork blew, and for the one banjo tune he knew and could play with gusto. No one was ever a stranger to Marlin; everyone was simply known as “Sam.”
Marlin was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Alice (Goody) Lowry, his sister M. Virginia Zakis, and Elizabeth Adels, his companion of many years. He is survived by his former wife, Kathleen (Kathie) Lowry of Cheyenne, his children, Janis Johnston of Washington D.C., Brian Lowry of Laramie, and Brent Lowry (wife Kappi) of Savannah GA, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law William (Bill) Zakis of Portland OR, who would probably be best described as Marlin’s big brother and best friend. Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel and a private memorial service will be held this spring in a style befitting Marlin’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Home Instead Senior Care of Cheyenne who took such great care of him over the past few years and allowed him to live out his life at home, something he felt very strongly about.
“Hear my vow before I go, Zoë mou sas agapo.”
