Les joined the Army in 1953 shortly after High School and was quickly promoted within the ranks. He excelled at organization and administration and was transferred to units in need of good leadership. He was a star pitcher in fast pitch softball and an avid car wheeler and dealer. He was transferred to Alaska for a term of 6 years and he and his family fell in love with it. He retired from the Army in 1977 in Cheyenne, WY and decided that this was home.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, active in VFW and DAV and responsible for finding a volunteer sponsor for the refurbishment of the DAV building.
He was an instructor at LCCC in desktop publishing, sold mobile homes for years with Circle ER, ran Cheyenne Business Equipment for several years, and was Business Manager for Preston University for more than 20 years. He served on the board of Warren Federal Credit Union, participated in the Southeast Wyoming Quality Committee for several years.
When he found a family in need he exerted himself to see that they were provided with the necessities and much more. During the holidays, Les provided turkeys to those in need and more when needed. Les never met a stranger and loved to leave 'em laughing.
He will be missed by all of us who knew and appreciated the generous, outstanding and humorous man that was Les Smith.
