Leota Gates

September 18, 1917 — May 17, 2019

Leota Gates, born September 18, 1917 to Andrew and Mathilda Wich in Wellington, Colorado, passed away at the age of 101 on May 17, 2019.
She grew up on the family farm there and graduated from Wellington High School.
Leota married Bernard Gates in 1936 and soon after they moved to Cheyenne, WY where he was employed by Union Pacific Railroad. She lived there until April 2018 when she went to Jefferson, GA for an extended stay to be near family. Leota was very independent and enjoyed having her own apartment, along with her little dog Franklin, at Bentley Assisted Living. She was fond of sitting in the flower garden, vegetable garden and joining in organized activities there.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her family was the center of her life and she loved nothing more than taking her grandkids camping and fishing. She was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge. In retirement, Leota and Bernard were active members of the Red Dale Camping Club and made countless trips with their friends in WY and neighboring states. Crocheting was a favorite pastime in winter months, and she was a skilled seamstress. Her grandchildren can attest to her skills in the kitchen.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Beverly Smith; and a grandson, Gregory Gates; as well as three brothers and a sister.
She is survived by her son, Gene (Debby) Gates of Commerce, GA; son-in-law, Merwyn (Becky) Smith of Whittier, CA; grandchildren, Dayna Taylor, Lynda Emmerling, Lori McMullin, Jennifer Meyers, all of CA, and Tim Gates, Tami McClung, and Terry Gates all of GA; and numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Maggi Thomas of Cheyenne.

Services will be Friday, 10:00 a.m., at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel with burial to follow in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.
