Kenneth “Kenny” R. Merklin, age 90, of Cheyenne, passed away at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family on December 8 and went immediately into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Ken was born in Benkleman, NE in December 1932, the middle child of Howard and Mae Merklin. Later the family moved to Cheyenne where he lived for the remainder of his life. A graduate of Cheyenne Central High School, he still enjoyed meeting weekly for coffee with some of his high school buddies.
Kenny met the love of his life, Bonnie Munden, at Evangelical Brethren Church, where they were married in June, 1955. This past summer they celebrated 68 years of marriage. When the couple was expecting their first child, they were surprised by the births of their twin daughters, Kathy and Karen. Later the birth of their son Boyd, made their family complete.
Ken was the ultimate family man who loved doing things with his children such as bike riding, swim nights, teaching the different sports, and attending their various activities and sporting events. He worked hard and played hard. He was on the church’s softball team, and he loved to hunt, fish, snowmobile and ride trail bikes with family and friends. Many special memories were made camping and at their mountain cabin. Early in their marriage, Ken worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and was in the Natal Reserves. A majority of his work career was spent working for the US Postal Service where he witnessed many changes in how mail was handled.
After he retired, he enjoyed having more time to spend at the cabin, travel with dear friends on road trips, cruises and bus trips, as well as being able to spend more time with his grandkids. He was delighted at the birth of his great granddaughter, Lauren Olivia.
Ken was a lifelong member of Faith United Methodist Church, and served in many roles over the years as Trustee, Board Member, choir member and many other capacities too numerous to list. He was a devoted family man and friend whose strong faith in God guided his every decision.
He is survived by his loving wife Bonnie, daughters Kathy Kissack, (Bart) of Gillette, WY, Karen Merklin of Cheyenne, WY and son Boyd Merklin of Englewood, CO, plus grandsons Nathan Kissack of Ft. Collins, CO, Jacob Kissack of Honolulu, HI and Levi Kissack (Taylor) of Eden Prairie, MN, plus great granddaughter Lauren. He is also survived by his sister, Wilma Coleman of Wentzville, MO and by his brother, Richard Merklin of Cheyenne and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Mae Merklin, as well as numerous other family.
