Kenneth L. Hawkins, 85, of Cheyenne went home to be with his Lord on May 14.
He was born on Dec. 9, 1931, in Hutchinson, Kansas and moved to Cheyenne in 1952.
Ken married Barbara Runyon on Feb. 10, 1973. He worked at Union Pacific Railroad, Ken’s Flooring, Orrison Distributing and owned Intermountain Auto Repair. His passion was stock/sprint car racing. He was a racing legend locally at Intermountain Speedway and also raced at tracks in Colorado and Nebraska. He served as president of the Wyoming Auto Racing Club where he was inducted into the WARC Hall of Fame in 2010. He was a fan of the Broncos and UW Cowboys. Ken and Barb attended Miracle Valley Church. He enjoyed time with family and loved spending time in his shop with his sons and grandsons. Ken always had a contagious smile, a humorous wit and a twinkle in his eye.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara Hawkins; daughters Kenise Miller (Terry), Linda Hawkins (JJ Johnston), Sheryl Kovalcik (Johnny), Kathy Colbert (Chris), Vickie Gallegos (Mario), and Cathy Gilliam (Steve); sons Kennie Martens (Debbie) and Don Runyon (Debbie); grandchildren Aaron Martens, Kandice Hansen, Christian Colbert, Chane Colbert, Glenn “Buddy” Gosbee, Tucker Gosbee, Sarah Runyon, Logan Runyon of Cheyenne; Jeffrey Housley, Jenni Amburn, Paul Real, Kailin Vannatter, David Vannatter, Amber Newman; ten great-grandchildren, including Kahyim Timm, Wyoma and Winter Gosbee locally. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie and Alma Hawkins; and granddaughter, Brandi Jo Housley.
