Kathy Lynn Niemann passed away on January 30, 2018. She was born June 30, 1953 in Oakland, Nebraska to Walter R. Blackerby and Marilyn Johnson. She attended elementary school in Nebraska and later Cheyenne.
When she was 15, she attended a birthday party of a friend of a friend and met David Niemann, the birthday girl’s boyfriend at the time. David said it was love at first sight and sat with Kathy throughout the party, completely ignoring his current girlfriend. They broke up shortly afterward and David began courting Kathy, a courtship that lasted through several years and several states. Kathy moved to Mesquite,Texas where she graduated high school while David joined the Navy. Kathy enrolled at the School of Cosmetology and Wig Styling in Dallas and upon the course completion, she took a hairdresser job in Garland, TX.
One day, after a two year separation, David called her up to propose. Stunned, Kathy said she needed time to think about it so Dave proposed spending a week together in Texas hoping he could re-woo her. A week later, on March 25, 1972, they were married in Cheyenne and then off to San Francisco where David soon deployed for Vietnam, leaving his new bride for 9 months. She worked at J.C. Penny’s styling wigs and selling lipstick to the likes of the Pointer Sisters – before they became famous.
They spent 5 years on the west coast, had their first son, Cristopher, and then moved back to Cheyenne where Kathy worked as a hairdresser until she died. She had two more sons and was a devoted but tough-as-nails mom (she had to be with three crazy boys). She became Secretary of Niemann Music while running her boys around to music lessons and baseball practice, but was always home to make a a home-cooked meal that her family loved.
Kathy enjoyed participating in the local Stars of Tomorrow shows and Miss Wyoming pageants as a stylist and make-up artist. She became a cherished member of St. Joseph’s parish as a devout Catholic, having converted to the faith through baptism on the U.S.S. Enterprise shortly after marrying David. She associated most closely with St. Francis as a compassionate lover of animals and owned several small dogs throughout her life. She loved scrapbooking and had quite a doll collection.
Later in life, she treasured spending time with her six grandchildren and was so pleased to have three of them move back to Cheyenne.
Kathy was preceded in death by her father and nephew, grandparents, mother-in-law and father-in-law. She is survived by her husband; three sons: Cristopher (married to Alaina, now in Cheyenne), Aaron (married to Jessica, now in Pennsylvania), and Jameson (now in Denver); six grandchildren; mother; siblings Sharon Robinson of Greeley, Donna Curtis of Cheyenne, and Kristy Chamberlain of Yukon, OK; and two loving dogs Chloe and Lady.
