Steve, 56, of Cheyenne Wyoming, returned to the Lord suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. He was born to Susan and John Schaefer on June 21st, 1966 (his mother's birthday) in Solon, Ohio.
He lived in Solon until he was 6 years old. In the summer of 1972 his family moved to Rockford, Illinois. He attended White Swan grade school followed by Flynn Middle school and Jefferson High School. He attend Rock Valley Community College and finished his degree at the University of Utah, where he majored in Political Science. He was the President of his fraternity Phi Sigma Kappa.
While living in Rockford, the family often traveled up to EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in the summers. Steve always looked forward to attending the airshows and seeing the different kinds of aircrafts. This started his love for all things mechanical, airplanes, bikes, minibikes, motorcycles, and cars. He definitely inherited his father and grandfather's amazing abilities to diagnose and fix cars. Steve loved fixing automobiles and was always helping his friends and family, either in person or over the phone. This is what brought him to work for Firestone in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was an excellent Service Manager with Firestone, but what mattered most was that he really enjoyed the people he worked with.
Steve enjoyed skiing in Wisconsin, but when he moved to Utah he fell in love with the "real" mountains and couldn't get enough skiing in. He became an instructor at the Brighton Ski Resort and later at another resort in Idaho. Since skiing is seasonal, he became a river and mountain bike guide during the summer months in Moab, Utah and several other locations. Steve also became an amazing cook, as he had to feed everyone on his guided trips. He was able to take his nephews, Grant and Adam on a river trip which is one their favorite childhood memories. Another joy for Steve was the Outward Bound program that he was involved in, he taught young people at risk how to handle stress and to be comfortable with themselves.
In January 2021, he met the love of his life, Barb Sherard. They were married this past year on July 16, 2022 at an outdoor wedding. Barb was a Godsend in his life, everyone felt their Love for each other everyday they were together. Steve loved to cook for Barb, he always liked to try out new recipes he found cooking shows. Although their time together was short, it felt like a lifetime.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Steve in Cheyenne, Wyoming around his birthday in June 2023. Steve was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all.. Information about the event will be available in the spring.
He is survived by his Wife Barb and Step-daughter Katrina Wilhelm and her husband Kaleb and daughters Katie and Karley, his father John George Schaefer, Jr, his sister Connie Hudgins and brother-in-law Glenn, Nephews Grant and Adam, his Father-in-law and mother-in-law Stan and Lee Sherard, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Wendy and Paul Juarez, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bob and Bryanna Sherard, Sister-in-law and brother-in-law Robin and Kerry Miller and many nieces and nephews.
