John Habel, 71
John Edward Habel passed away June 10, 2015 at his home, in Cheyenne surrounded by his family. John was born May 5, 1944 in Wheatland. He was the son of John and Velma (Graham) Habel.
John grew up in Torrington and later served in the Army in the Vietnam War. John was a long-time resident of Medicine Bow, Wyoming. John was a jack-of-all-trades and could be found bareback riding in the rodeo, building cars for the Indy 500, running the meat department at the Bow Market and logging many hours on the road. Tinkering in the garage was his passion and he enjoyed restoring anything with an engine. In his spare time he also loved repairing watches, making jewelry, pitching horseshoes, listening to classic country and exploring in the Wyoming mountains.
He was the beloved life partner of Donna Phillips. The two of them enjoyed dancing, traveling and spending time with their family and friends.
He is survived by Donna; his children; Cheryl Abbott of Gillette, Jody (husband Toby) Engel of Windsor, Joni Habel of Pine Bluffs, and Jason (wife Annie) Habel of Laramie; his 3 step-children; Dana (husband Eric), Kathy and Kim; 11 loving grandchildren Cody (wife Sarah), Jimi (husband Owen), Brady, Austin, Delaney, Brogan, Jace, Jarrett, Erin (husband Ray), Jesi, and Addie; 3 great-grandchildren Emma, Bella and Jack; and 2 sisters, Ann and Diana.
John was preceded in death by his parents John and Velma, step-father Dr. Ben Cohen, brother Ben and sister Debbie.
A memorial celebration of John’s life will be held Saturday, June 20, 2015 at White Rock Canyon in the Medicine Bow National Forest near Arlington. The family will gather and greet friends at 1:00 pm. Following lunch and remembrance of John they will spread his ashes at his favorite lily ponds.
