John Charles Cole, 78, of Cheyenne, passed away at Granite Wellness Center in Cheyenne on Nov. 22, 2015.
John was born Oct. 8, 1937, to Jack and Helen Cole in Cheyenne. He attended St. Mary’s School, becoming a decorated athlete and Eagle Scout. John earned his engineering degree from the University of Wyoming in 1961.
John met Penny Smith in Cheyenne in 1960. They were married Dec. 30, 1961. Together they had five children. For the rest of their lives, John and Penny called Cheyenne their home.
John was a civil engineer for the Wyoming Department of Transportation for 37 years, retiring in 1996 with many professional accolades.
John was a living example of servant leadership. An avid supporter of Cheyenne Frontier Days, he began driving parade carriages as a boy, and would eventually serve as the general chairman in 1975-76. For decades, John’s rich voice could be heard announcing CFD slack, praising cowboys and sharing a silly joke. John was inducted into the CFD Hall of Fame in 2003, one of his proudest accomplishments.
John was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis and Jaycees. He served on the LCCC Board of Trustees and Laramie County Fair Board. He coached youth baseball and announced rodeos and horse shows. He earned the 2002 Spirit of Cheyenne Award.
John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, Tom Cole; his wife Penny; children Debbie Kyger, Sandy Hubbard, Kathleen Bordner, Bill Cole and Teresa Milner; and nine grandchildren.
A rosary for John will be 6:00 p.m., Friday, Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, St. Mary’s Cathedral, with a reception at the Buckle Club to follow.
