Jean Maurine Hitchcock Townsend, 95, of Cheyenne, passed away June 25 at Davis Hospice.
She was born July 10, 1921 in Wray, Colorado to James and Emma Hitchcock.
Jean graduated from Yuma County High in Wray, Class of 1940.
In 1941 she went to Denver to study nursing at St. Luke’s Hospital, where she worked surgery all during WWII at Denver Children’s Hospital.
She married Harold L. Townsend in 1946 in Denver, moving to Wyoming out to Horse Creek then to Cheyenne in 1965.
She is survived by her “adopted” daughter, Suzie Harshberger and another friend, Polly Highland; four grandchildren, Ricky Townsend of Casper, and Shane, Kelly and Brenda; nieces and nephew, Gary (Marian) Whitehead, of Wellington, Colorado,
Cheryl (Jim) Knox, of Cedaridge, Colorado, and Carolyn (Jon) Boudendested of Evans, Colorado.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband in 1985; parents, son, Wayne in 1998; sister, Carol Whitehead and a brother, Jackson Hitchcock.
She was a life member of the VFWA 4343 for over 50 years in which she was active until 2012.
She loved volunteering at the VA Hospital with 11,000 hours. She served as the State Hospital Chairman for the VFWA for 20 years and enjoyed every bit of it.
She was also a life member of Post 6 Auxiliary and a member of the First Congregational Church.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday at Holy Trinity Manor.
