Janice Loewen Smith, 80, passed away on April 22, 2016 at her home in Cheyenne after a two and ½ year battle with cancer.
Janice was born to Jacob and Lena Loewen on March 22, 1936 in Richey, MT. She later moved to South Dakota and graduated from high school in Marion, SD in 1954. She attended nurses training at Presentation School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, SD, and graduated in 1957.
In 1960, Janice married John Smith in Bridgewater, SD. They moved to Rapid City and then to Gillette, Wyoming during the first energy boom. She practiced nursing in Rapid City and Gillette for nearly 40 years, working for several doctors, Campbell County Memorial Hospital and as the Director of Nursing at Pioneer Manor nursing home.
Janice was known for her faith and her positive outlook. She loved spending time with her family and planning family reunions. Janice was a master gardener with many gardens to tend. She enjoyed her many friends from Element Church and the Seed and Weed Garden Club. Janice also loved her Broncos and never missed a game on TV.
Janice is survived by her four children, Joyce (Dave) Hefenieder, Tom Smith, Tim (Rhonda) Smith and Julie (Larry) Glass; and eight grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Helen Warkenthien and numerous nieces and nephews.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and seven siblings.
Cremation has taken place at Wiederspahn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes. At Janice’s request, her family will hold a private celebration of her life with no formal service.
A memorial to the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens has been established.
