James Ross Harnish, Sr. 85, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away December 20th, 2017, at Davis Hospice Center. He was born January 9th, 1932 in Horse Creek, Wyoming to Charles and Bonnie, one of nine siblings. After graduating Wheatland High School, he served in the Army as a musician. He attended the University of Wyoming earning a Civil Engineering degree in 1956. He married the love of his life, Marnie on June 9th, 1957 in Cheyenne where they raised their four children. Jim went on to work for the Wyoming Highway Department for 32 years. He was a talented musician and led country western bands for 35 years. He joined the Moose Fraternity after college where he was a devoted member, earning the Pilgrim Degree.
Jim was a devoted family man whose main focus in life was taking care of his family. His passions were hard work, hunting and fishing, all of which he passed on to his family. Most at home at his cabin, Jim was an avid outdoorsman. Jim was an expert with a crossbow or fishing pole and knew where the deer and elk were hiding and where the fish were biting. Always ready with a story to tell and a patient, listening ear, Jim’s infectious smile, quick laughter and ingenuity will be missed by all who knew him, especially his family.
James is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marnie; brother Bennie Harnish; children, Lynette Kranz (Don), Sheryl McIrvin (Matt), Valerie Spencer (Leigh), J. R. Harnish; grandchildren, Jason (Lauren) Williams, Joshua (Carrie) Williams, Melissa (Joe) Buljung, Morgan (Eric) Shabe, Tricia Spencer, Stephanie King; and eleven great-grandchildren.
