Jack Paul Shockley died Jan. 22 in Cheyenne. He was born June 9, 1946, in Oklahoma City, OK, but his family was living in Cheyenne and he spent his entire life in Wyoming. He attended Cheyenne schools and was graduated from Cheyenne Central High School in 1964. Following high school, he attended both the University of Wyoming and Chadron State College, participating in ROTC programs. He joined the Navy Reserve in 1967 but did not serve immediately due to a knee injury.
On Jan. 28, 1968, he married Penny Martinec. They had five children, sons Lance and Luke, and daughters Wendy, Jackie and Jennifer. While in college he began working for the Union Pacific Railroad, following in the footsteps of his father and uncles. As a railroader he was a switchman, a brakeman, and eventually became a locomotive engineer. He continued to work for the railroad as an engineer until health issues forced his retirement. He also engaged in a variety of other work opportunities including as a horse breeder, hog breeder, and owning and operating a hay farm in Nebraska. He also owned S&S Construction doing excavation and dirt work.
Jack was passionate about hunting and harvested moose, elk, deer, and other game animals. He designed and built his own hunting rifles, but a special gun he owned was a flintlock musket replica given to him by Penny as her wedding gift to him. On one hunting trip in Colorado, he killed a bear using a bow and arrow. He had horses for use in hunting, and he also used them in team roping with family and friends.
His varied interests also involved flying after his dad bought a Cessna 140. Jack had secretly been taking flying lessons, and he was able to surprise his dad in knowing how to pilot the plane. Through the years they had other planes, including one that was a twin engine that he used for several fun trips including one to Mexico.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents H.C. and Jean Shockley, and an infant brother, Marvin.
