J. Michael Doherty, 74, of Cheyenne, died on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.
He was born on April 13, 1944 in Kansas City, Kansas.
Mike graduated from Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, KS in 1962 and went on to attend Pittsburg State University on an athletic scholarship. While in college he met Jane Gaston and they married December 15, 1965. In August 1966 their son Mark was born. Mike joined Equitable Life Assurance of New York in 1969 and the family moved to Wichita, KS and their daughter Robin was born in 1972. In 1978 the family moved to Cheyenne when Mike was promoted to Agency Manager of Equitable Life in Wyoming. In 1979 he was honored as the Young Agency Manager of the Year. It was in Cheyenne where Mike and Jane made lifelong friends who have become family. While in Cheyenne, Mike was a member of the Board of Trustees at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center from 1985-1989 and served as the Board’s President from 1988-1989. In 1989, Mike became Vice President of Western Operations for Equitable. In 1990 Mike was named Agency Manger of AXA/Equitable Life Assurance and relocated to Cleveland, OH. In 1995, Mike retired, and he and Jane relocated back to their home of Cheyenne. He served as a member of the Parades and Grounds Committee for Cheyenne Frontier Days. He was an active member of the Airport Golf Club as well as the Cheyenne Country Club. He enjoyed his high-stakes golf games and loved his daily coffee klatch at the Four Winds. Mike and Jane wintered in Chico, CA with their daughter Robin and their grandkids. His greatest joy was supporting his son-in-law Dave and the Chico State Wildcats Baseball Team as well as watching his grandsons play baseball and basketball….he rarely missed a game.
Mike is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane and his daughter Robin and son-in-law Dave Taylor of Chico, CA as well as his grandsons Mark and Jack. He is preceded in death by his father Gavin Doherty and his mother Georgia Sims and his son, Mark Doherty.
Funeral Liturgy will be Saturday, 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
