Howard J. Wattles, 90 of Cheyenne, died on August 10, 2022 in Cheyenne.
He was born on June 3, 1932 in Effingham, Illinois.
Howard graduated from Billings Senior High in 1951 in Billings, Montana. He joined the Navy Reserve prior to graduation and went to Boot Camp shortly after he graduated. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii with tours to South Korea during the Korean War and Enewetak Atoll aboard the USS O’Bannon. While in Hawaii, Pat and Howard were married at the Submarine Base Chapel and just celebrated 70 years of happiness on July 8, 2022. After serving in the Navy, he returned to Billings where he started working for Yellowstone County. He then worked for Burlington Truck Lines until he started his career with Standard Oil/AMOCO. Howard worked for Standard Oil/AMOCO until he retired in 1988 after 27 years of service. Howard was a proud member of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge. He was passionate about many things in life, but none more important than his beloved family. Howard loved to hunt, fish, travel, work on his race cars and eventually classic cars as he grew older. Camping was another hobby that he thoroughly enjoyed in his retirement with his wife Pat. Pat and Howard wintered in Yuma, Arizona where he loved sitting on his back patio in the warm weather at their beautiful home. In June of 2016, Howard was awarded an Ambassador for Peace Medal by the South Korean Consulate and Governor Matt Mead of Wyoming for his service during the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife Patricia J. Wattles, daughters Lynda Lenz (Hugh) of Wheatland, Wyoming, and Karen Brown (Larry) of Cheyenne Wyoming, his four nephews Larry Wattles (Gina), Gary Wattles (Denise), Terry Wattles (Jan), and Barry Wattles (Kathy), four grandchildren Justin Brown (Shannon) of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Brett Lenz (Ed) of Pinedale, Wyoming, Landon Brown (Rachel) of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Kyle Lenz (Taylor) of Fort Rucker, Alabama, several great-nieces and nephews that were very dear to him including a very special great-niece Kristine Brady (Jeremy) of Billings, Montana, four great grandchildren, and five great great-grandchildren.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Helen Wattles, his brother Garland Wattles, sister in-law Jo Wattles, and brother in-law Robert Bade.
