Henry L. Gimbel, 97, a loving and caring husband, father and a WII veteran, died peacefully at the Cheyenne VA hospital on February 22, 2017. He was born on May 13, 1919 in McClusky, North Dakota, the seventh of thirteen children to Henry and Karoline Gimbel.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and was assigned to the 145 G Company, 37th Division of the Ohio National Guard. He served as an infantryman in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in the northern Solomon Islands. Henry returned to the U.S. and was honorably discharged from military service in 1944.
Henry married Rosalee McCord on October 9, 1948. He provided for his family with over 30 years of employment at the Frontier/Husky Oil/Marathon Oil refinery in Cheyenne. He cared deeply for his family, both immediate and extended and was a loyal friend to many. Henry loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, and working in his yard, where he always had a beautiful lawn and a garden full of flowers.
His family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Cheyenne VA Medical Center and especially to the VA Home Based Care team for the excellent care he received over the last several years.
Henry is survived by his daughters Jennifer Gimbel, Linda and husband Frank Schleicher, and Debra and husband Clovis Long. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one brother, three sisters, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Rose (2005), his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
A memorial service with military honors will take place on May 13, 2017, at 10:00 A.M. in the Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made in Henry's honor to the VA Medical Center, 2360 E. Pershing Blvd, Cheyenne, WY 82001, with designation to the No Veteran Dies Alone volunteer program or to the choice of the donor. Cremation has taken place.
