Helen F. Montez, 96, of Cheyenne, passed away at Davis Hospice Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 15, 1927, in Wheatland, Wyoming to Theodore and Ysaura Flores.
She married her childhood neighbor George Montez. When George returned from the war they eloped to Bridgeport, NB and were married for 69 years. They started their life together by working for the Union Pacific Railroad in Bosler/Laramie, WY. Helen later went on to work for the University of Wyoming where she rose to the position of head housekeeper for the president of the University. A passion of hers was politics where she was involved in many aspects. In 1977, she went to Houston, TX as one of the delegates from Wyoming to participate in the first and only federally funded National Women’s Conference in U.S. history. On the local level, her biggest achievement was fighting for and receiving a Federal grant to improve the streets and sidewalks on the west side of Laramie. After retirement, she continued her favorite hobby of gardening, which lead to volunteering at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens.
She is survived by her two children, Elizabeth Suazo and George A. (Kathy) Montez; two sisters Francis and Angie; 4 grandchildren Michael Suazo, Cherri Johnson, Anita (Don) Dragoo, Helen (Rocky) Montez-Carr, 4 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
