June 23, 1925 — June 22, 2015

Harold R. "Nubs" Bernd, 89, passed away June 22 in Cheyenne in the presence of family. He was one day shy of turning 90.

Nubs was born June 23, 1925, in Faith, S.D. A few years later, his family moved to Sundance, where he made his home until August 2013.

At that time, he and his wife, Norma, relocated to Cheyenne to be closer to their girls.

At 18, Nubs was drafted into the U.S. Army and served overseas in France and Germany, and in the Battle of the Bulge. He received three battle stars: Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.

When World War II ended, Nubs returned to Wyoming and used the GI bill at the University of Wyoming to earn a degree in electrical engineering. He was a member of the Sigma Tau National Honorary Society for his excellent grades in engineering.

Having earned his degree, he returned to Sundance and spent his entire life working for his father, Raymond Bernd, at Small Homes Company.

Nubs was quartermaster for 38 years for the local Veterans of Foreign Wars in Sundance. He also served as senior warden for the Church of the Good Shepherd until his move to Cheyenne.

Early on in his career, he met Norma Beagle. He married her Oct. 21, 1951. They have two children, Cindy (Michael) Hager and Sandy (Tony) Barnett. Nubs and Norma also have five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lulu Bernd; brothers, Lester and Russell; sister, Luella; and nephews, Jerry Kipp and Les E. Bernd.

Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, P.O. Box 246, Sundance, WY 82729.
