Gordon Stirling Craig, Jr., 92, of Cheyenne, passed away March 4 at his home.
Gordon was born November 22, 1923, to Gordon Stirling Craig, Sr. and Pearl (Dougan) Craig in Providence, RI. He grew up and went to school in Webster, MA In 1942 enlisted in the US Army and became a pilot of the famous P-51 Mustang fighter/bomber. He fought in the Pacific and received several decorations. Upon returning home, he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in Troy, NY, graduating with a bachelor degree in civil engineering. While on a surveying field trip to Poultney, VT, he met Jeanne Ann Nicoll, of Garden City, NY, who was attending Green Mountain College. They married in 1950 and were married 64 years, until Jeanne passed away in 2014. Gordon is survived by their three sons, James, Peter and Michael, three step-grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Gordon was preceded in death by his brother Alan Craig.
Gordon went to work for the US Geological Survey out of college, working in New York and California before transferring to the Cheyenne office and moving his family here in 1963. They lived on Oxford Drive for 50 years.
Gordon was an avid golfer, bowler, and reader of action and western novels. He lettered in golf while at college, and in Cheyenne was a regular at the Airport and Prairie View golf courses. He was a cancer survivor, having lost a kidney to bladder cancer in the1980s.
In accordance with his wishes he has been cremated. In spite of his wishes, a small memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel.
