George Owen Shearer

August 14, 1936 — July 26, 2024

George Shearer, 87 of Cheyenne, WY, passed away in the peace and comfort of his home July 26, 2024. George was born on August 14, 1936, in Moran Junction, WY, to mountain man Claude Shearer and Pearl (Germann) Shearer, where he grew up with his two siblings, Walter and Claudia.
His family moved to Lander, WY, around 1945 where he graduated from high school. He went onto Casper College where he was on the Casper College Rodeo Team.
After marrying his wife, Gail Bybee of Lander, WY, in February of 1960, and having two children in Lander; George, Gail, Deann and K.C. moved to Jackson Hole, WY. George was employed by the Jackson Hole Voluntary Fire Department for approximately 20 years, also serving as Fire Chief; in which he served during the Yellowstone Fires of 1988. He co-owned Electric Center with his wife in Jackson and worked in HVAC services during that time. George suffered the early deaths of his children K.C. Shearer in 1989 and Deann Henson in 1993. He and his wife moved to Cheyenne in 1993 to be closer to their two young grandchildren after Deann's death. There, he worked as an HVAC specialist for Cheyenne Sheet Metal Products. He raised angora goats in Cheyenne and from their wool came the yarn he used to weave traditional Navajo style rugs; he had immense pride in his work and learned the art directly from the Navajo Master Weavers. Many of these rugs went on to become Grand Champion winners at various Wyoming State Fairs. In 2006 he lost his beloved wife Gail suddenly, and found himself a widow. In the years that followed George kept up his weaving, he enjoyed going to morning rodeos at Frontier Park, spending time with his son-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In his life, George Shearer was an avid fisherman, a horseman and a talented artist. He had a photographic memory and there was nothing he could not fix. He was a man who stuck to his guns, he held a great belief in doing what needed to be done, and doing what he felt was right. He survived cancer multiple times, and he had an amazingly strong spirit. He was a man of few words who took immense pride in taking care of himself, and his home, and accepting help only on his terms.
George is survived by sister, Claudia Raecke (Eric) of Buffalo WY; son-in-law, Samuel Henson (Laura) of Ithaca NY; grandson, Dean Henson (Amber) of Omaha NE; granddaughter, Hali Henson of Cheyenne WY' and great grandchildren, Beckham and Berkley of Omaha NE, and his dear friend and companion Ruth Locke of Rochester NY.
George is preceded in death by parents, Claude and Pearl Shearer; brother, Walter Shearer; wife, Gail; and children, Deann and K.C.
