Eleanor Mae Aune

April 14, 1924 — October 6, 2019

Eleanor M. “Nanny” Aune 95, of Cheyenne, passed away Sunday, 10/6/2019, at her beloved daughter’s home. She was born April 14, 1924 in Northwood, North Dakota. She grew up in North Dakota and was the last survivor of 15 children.
She moved to Cheyenne in 1942 with her sister Adeline Pederson, initially to work building planes for the war effort. A strong and independent woman, she worked many jobs—at the Mayflower, Park’s Jewelers, Wiederspanh’s—then began a career with the State of Wyoming Retirement Department, which she enjoyed until her retirement at age 75.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
She enjoyed her coffee, shrimp, strawberries, card games (especially whist), country music, and trips to Black Hawk with her daughter Karen. She loved to dance, judging men not by how good-looking they were, but rather by how well they danced.
She had a playful sense of humor, quick to make herself and others laugh. A kind and generous woman, she adored her family and cherished every moment spent together. She was always eager to show her love and bring her family together through cooking, baking, and helping in any way she could. A tenacious spirit and hard worker, she would wake up at 5 A.M. to bake her famous cinnamon rolls for family gatherings and holidays.
She recently became a great-great-grandmother and was overjoyed to meet her great-great-granddaughter Ellie earlier this year.
Nanny served as the matriarch of her large and loving family, and is survived by: daughter Karen and husband Bill McCoy; grandson Bill and wife Kathy McCoy; great-granddaughter Katlyn Wilhelm and husband Ryan, and great-great-granddaughter Ellie Wilhelm; great-grandson Danny McCoy; granddaughter Michelle McCoy, and great-grandson Jordan Ostrum.
She was preceded in death by her parents Martin and Anna Pederson; her brothers Clarence and Martin Pederson; Sam, John, George, and Willie Wiertzema; and her sisters Mabel Coe; Rena Berg; Genevieve Chapman; Alice Gushanas; Clara Beaird; Annabelle Chapman; and Adeline Pederson.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 12 at Wiederspahn-Radomsky.
