Edward D. Schafer, Jr., 84, died February 1 in Cheyenne.
He was born in Cheyenne August 17, 1931. Ed attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated from St. Patrick's high school in North Platte, Nebraska, and Regis College in Denver, Colorado.
Ed entered the United States Navy in 1952 and in 1953 was commissioned an Ensign and Aviator. He retired in 1974 as a Lieutenant Commander after many cruises on aircraft carriers and living in Pensacola, Florida and Virginia Beach, Virginia. After he retired, Ed owned an Allstate Insurance Agency in Cheyenne.
Ed enjoyed traveling to see his family, spending time outdoors, woodworking, and bike riding with Pat on the Greenway. He was a member of the Gem and Mineral Club, and spent many hours volunteering at the Children's Village.
Ed is survived by his wife, Patricia Shafer; six sons and five daughters-in-law, Ed and Lori Schafer III, Joe and Sallie Schafer, Ed and Sekenna Gavagan, Terrence and Jenny Gavagan, Brian and Karin Gavagan, and Tim Schafer; four daughters and four sons-in-law, Kim and LeRoy Jones, Mary and Marvin Hamilton, Ann and Jim Grundell and Eileen Gavagan and Lane Hill; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alberta Scheetz-Schafer; parents, Edward and Martha Schafer, Sr. and brother, Jack Schafer.
Funeral Liturgy will be 10:00 a.m., Monday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel with Father Michael Carr as celebrant. Interment of his urn will follow at Olivet Cemetery.
