She was born June 1, 1928 in Johnson City, Tennessee, but moved to Los Angeles, California with her parents when only ten days old. After attending public schools there, she graduated in 1950 from Occidental College where she majored in psychology and minored in music. She was Occidental’s first student to participate in their Junior Year Abroad program. Funded in part by a Rotary Club scholarship, she spent that year in college as an exchange student in Sweden, where she attended the Technische Högschule in Stockholm. Dorothy and her husband, John, were married in Los Angeles in December, 1950. They moved to the Denver area in April, 1951, returned to southern California in 1964, and retired in Cheyenne in 1993.

She was an accomplished pianist, and enjoyed a wide range of interests and activities. She was a dedicated homemaker with an adventuresome streak in the kitchen, and enjoyed grinding her own flour, baking bread, and making everything from scratch. She had an avid interest in health and nutrition, gardening, camping, tennis, and biking. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Cheyenne High Plains Audubon Society, and Friends of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. She treasured spending time with family and friends, and took great delight in caring for others. She celebrated life every day and held to a deep and genuine faith. She was a long-time member of Grace Communion church.

She is survived by five children: Mark (Miranda) of Marietta, GA; Ross (Jan) of Shelby Twp, MI; Joy Flynn of Cheyenne; John II (Toni) of Hawkins, TX; and Catherine (Ray Jr.) Fertig of Cheyenne; a brother, Theodore Chavannes of Thousand Oaks, CA; fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-one great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007, her parents Albert and Margaret (McCown) Chavannes, and her older brother, Adrian Chavannes.
