Donald Morain of Cheyenne passed away at the age of 98 on March 2, 2017. Don was a longtime resident of Cheyenne.
Don was born to Ernest and Maude Morain on January 7, 1919 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His mother passed away when he was 3 months old, and he was raised by two aunts and his father. Don moved to Boulder County, Colorado with his father in 1933. He worked as a miner in Crisman, Colorado. On September 18, 1940, he joined the United States Army and attended basic training at Fitzsimmons, Colorado. On August 15, 1943, he joined the 82nd Airborne, F Company, Group 504. In January 1944, he deployed with them to Casa Blanca, Morocco, in North Africa. After campaigns in Oran and Tunis, he deployed to Naples, Italy and was a member of the landing force at Anzio, Italy. After the campaign at Anzio, Don transferred to England to train for the invasion of Europe.
On September 17, 1944, he was part of a group that parachuted into German occupied Holland. The group he was with parachuted 57 miles behind enemy lines. He was injured during that jump, and was sent to a British hospital in Belgium. He recovered from his injuries, and on December 16, 1944, he returned to Belgium in time to fight in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded again. After recovering from those wounds, he was deployed to Germany, and upon the surrender of the German Army in 1945, remained at Hanover Fighter Base to provide security.
Upon returning to England, Don joined the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing. In 1948, he transferred to F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, WY where he served as Range Master until his retirement on January 31, 1963. He then went to work for the State of Wyoming – Department of Transportation, and remained there until his retirement on December 31, 1984.
Don was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and enjoyed watching the Wyoming Cowboys football team and the Denver Broncos on television. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
Don was preceded in death by his mother and father. A private graveside service has been scheduled. Memorials may be made to the Cheyenne Salvation Army.
