David Packwood Newbold, 90, of Carr, Colorado passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023. He was born October 13, 1932 near Riverton, Franklin County, Nebraska, to Day and Nellie (Mustain) Newbold, the second oldest son. He was proud to be a descendent of pioneers from Eastern Colorado and Nebraska.
Dave’s Army service as a Medic, where he was known as “Tex” because of his 6’ 4” height, included 3 years in Germany. It was there that he met and married his life-long sweetheart, Gertrud Mueller.
After being honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant, Dave became an X-ray Technician at Denver General Hospital while taking the LPN course. Dave was put on the tough night shifts, one of the few on staff that could handle the often violent cases coming through the ER. He also worked security for Burns Detective Service, on assignment all over Denver.
When David switched careers and became the Town Marshall for Morrison, Colorado, he was responsible to keep the little town safe as notorious motorcycle gangs and partying rock music fans funneled through on their way out of a Red Rocks Park concert. The local Denver TV station aired a special after sending a news camera crew to record his journey through the town, focusing on his cowboy boots walking down the street and entering businesses, as he greeted customers and owners.
After a few years, Dave started and then eventually retired from his own security business that included the new highway put in when Bear Creek Dam was built and for gravel companies.
Dave never quit learning, taking numerous courses in person or by correspondence and achieving a briefcase full of diplomas and certificates. He considered education as the key to life’s success and would tell all he met to continue to further their studies.
Dave could strike up a conversation with anyone, liked to keep up with current events and read a vast variety of books and magazines. But always God and family came first. He served as a deacon, Sabbath School teacher, and other roles in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church-- encouraging others to stand firm in their faith.
Dave liked to use humor and frequently had a favorite nickname for friends and family. He was noted for his western dress of cowboy boots, jeans, kerchief and cowboy hat, and with his goatee and shoulder length hair strangers would sometimes cautiously approach him, asking if he was a movie star, and some insisting that he was.
Beekeeping, raising sheep, and citizen band radio were some of his hobbies. And often a dog was by his side. Dave liked looking for bargains at the “cheap stores” and flea markets, including books his grand and great-grand children could grow into so that they, too, would have a love of reading.
Dave grieved the early deaths of his youngest daughter, Katharina (Pat) Geiger, adopted son Mark Newbold; grandson, Ryan Spickard; and great-grandson, Willem Baran; his mother, father, 6 sisters, and 1 brother also preceded him. But he always looked forward with great hope to Christ’s Second Coming and an eternity with his friends and loved ones.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Gertrud, who walked hand in hand with him for 68 years; daughters, Cornelia Spickard and Monica Hansen; son, David Newbold, Jr; son-in-law, Daniel Spickard ; brother, Vernon Newbold; sisters, Florence Rutherford, Lenora (Edward) Wilkerson, Roberta Molkentin, and Anita Newbold; and many others; grand and great-grand children were his pride and joy. He liked their bear hugs and took personal interest in their activities. Those left to cherish his memory are: Amanda (Mike) Spanbauer and sons Andrew and Jacob; Melissa (Craig) Blanckaert and children, Aine, Laurana, and Daegen; Gennifer (Jeremy) Anderson and sons Jadon, Seth, Toby, and Joel; Peter (Carolyn) Hansen and their children Titus, Jesse, Uriah, and Evana; Elijah (Trista) Hansen and sons Brady and Levi; Heidi (Albert) Omari and sons Ephraim and Judah; Clayton, Malachi, and Misha Newbold; Mitchell (Sophia) Geiger and daughter Sloane; Kari (Dylan) McWilliams and children McCrea and Bowdin.
