David W Jonker

May 20, 1951 — August 19, 2021

David Wesley Jonker, 70, of Cheyenne, Wyoming passed peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on August 19, 2021. He was born May 20,1951 in Wichita, KS to Walbert Max Jonker and Elsie Irene Holmes Jonker.

In August 1971, David married the love of his life, Madeline Emiko Ogata. Together they moved about the country raising their daughters, eventually settling in Cheyenne in 1989. He loved his family with every fiber of his being. In the hours leading up to his passing, he reminded them several times that they were his reason for living, having made his life complete.

Fondly known to many as “Bigwave Dave”, the surf-riding realtor has been a respected pillar of the Cheyenne community for the past 28+ years. He was ornery, always ready with a joke, and a big teddy bear at heart. He loved traveling, spending time outdoors fishing, riding his ATV, and taking in the immense beauty of the magnificent Wyoming sunsets. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ, he loved people, and he loved his country, serving in the US Navy. He was an active member of many organizations, such as the Lion’s Club and the American Legion. He was an avid supporter of Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Town, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph Indian School, Wounded Warrior Project, and the Disabled American Veterans.

David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Madeline Jonker (Cheyenne, WY); daughters, Heather (Casey) Gilmore (Aurora, CO) and Amber (James) Schlabs (Cheyenne, WY); granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Emma Gilmore (Aurora, CO); siblings, Jeanne (Tom) Garrelts (Wichita, KS) and Thom Jonker (Galt, CA). He is preceded in death by his parents, Walbert Max and Elsie Irene Jonker.

There will be a Celebration of Life Open House on September 8 from 2 to 5 p.m. at The Metropolitan; 1701 Carey Avenue, Cheyenne, WY 82001.

There will be Celebration of Life Service on October 17 at 5 p.m. at City Church of Assembly of God; 2634 N. Amidon Avenue, Wichita, KS 67204.

The family wishes to thank you all for your love, support, and prayers during this very difficult time.
