Darlyne Wells, age 89, passed away peacefully in her home in Sandy, Utah on February 9, 2025.
Darlyne was born in Tonganoxie, Kansas December 29, 1935 to Leland Burr and Wanda Fern Brown Powell. She married Rex William Wells on August 1, 1952 in Cheyenne, Wyoming and they were later sealed in the Logan Utah Temple on July 2, 1965.
Darlyne was a kind, loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was known for her nonjudgmental nature and her ability to welcome and love many into her life and home. Her generosity and warmth touched the lives of all who knew her and she will be deeply missed.
While she lived most of her life in Cheyenne, Wyoming she also lived in Colorado and Kansas. In the last eleven years of her life she made her home in Sandy, Utah with Roger and Tammy, her daughter.
Darlyne was a hard worker and excelled in every job she undertook. She felt that a job worth doing was worth doing right. Her professional experiences included working for Gaffin Cleaning Service, serving as a training manager at Taco Johns and working as lead custodian for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She also provided day care in her home and felt love and joy caring for all children.
As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Darlyne held many leadership roles including Relief Society President, Young Women President, Primary President and teacher in each of these organizations. She was a valiant servant of Christ, dedicating her life to the service of others.
One of her most cherished accomplishments was working alongside Sharman Straub to establish the Cheyenne Angel Statue at Lakeview Cemetery in August 2000. Together they worked tirelessly to raise funds for a place where parents who had lost children could go to honor and remember them.
Darlyne and Rex raised four children together: Debra, Roxanne, Tammy and Russell Rex “Rusty”.
She is survived by two of her daughters, Debra Ghaster and Tammy (Roger) Merrell; grandchildren, Katrina Vermillion (Jeremy Vaughan), Shalene (Chris) Baird, Tyler (Tessa) Merrell, and Amanda (Isaac) Dunford; great-grandchildren, Cheyton Vermillion, Chenoa (Parid) Shkoza and Tucker Merrell; great-great-granddaughter, Maeve Shkoza; brother, Leland Burr (Pat) Powell “Junior”; sisters-in-law, Sharon Wells and Dana Wells; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Darlyne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rex; their children, Roxanne Allen and Russell Rex Wells; son-in law, Paul Allen; granddaughter, Marie Ann Wells; great-grandson, Branson Wade Vaughan; siblings, Edna Hammontree, Ruth Stickles, Jack Powell and Carolyn Solomon.
A viewing will be held in Cheyenne, Wyoming Thursday February 13th from 10 am to 4 pm at Wiederspahn Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes, 1900 E 19th Street. The funeral services will be Friday February 14th at the Stake Center, 309 Western Hills Blvd, starting at 11 am with a viewing before at 10:00 to 10:45 am. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
