Christine Berta Payton, 96, of Cheyenne, died on January 4, 2022 in Cheyenne.
She was born in Schwanowitz, Germany on July 17, 1925.
Christine came to the United States in 1949 and became a naturalized citizen in 1957. She spent most of her adult life in Glen Burnie, Maryland but also lived in Bad Tolz, Germany and New Orleans, Louisiana.
She traveled in parts of Germany, Austria, England, Belgium, Holland, Poland and wherever her son and his family were for Christmas – Lusby, Maryland, Hampton, Virginia, Ewa Beach, Hawaii, San Diego, California, or Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Christine was preceded in death by her parents, Georg and Elsa Bänisch; and her husband, Alexander.
She is survived by her sister, Dorothea Bänisch of Pforzheim, Germany; a son, Donald Payton (Jeanne) of Cheyenne; grandsons, Richard Payton (Megan) of Gypsum, Colorado and Stephen Payton of Ft. Collins, Colorado; great grandchildren, Rose, Conner, and Arthur; plus, the rest of the Worldwide Mishpoke.
She was a daughter, sister, Army Wife, Mom, Omi, friend, and confidant. She was a loving, faithful, and caring woman and no better Mom or friend existed. She was always interested in others, and was a helpful and renowned cook and baker, at times mischievous and curious. She loved to read, talk, explore new places, and a good fireworks display. She was proud to stand for three service anthems – Army, Marine, and Navy. A grandchild, cat or dog was a welcome lap companion. Christine worked as a pre-school assistant, choir member, and Sunday School and Confirmation Teacher. She was a member of Glen Lutheran Church in Glen Burnie, Maryland, Christ Lutheran Church in Eleveton, Maryland, and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She was also a Lutheran Missionary Society Volunteer in Baltimore, Maryland and a Red Hat Society Member in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Services will be Friday, 1:00 p.m., at Our Savior Lutheran Church with burial to follow in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.
