Our Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Bane T. Travis, M.D., went peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, following an extended illness, on August 5, 2016 at CRMC in Cheyenne. He was 94.
Dr. Travis was born August 11, 1921 in LaSalle-Peru, Illinois to David L. Travis and Emma M. (Bane) Travis. He was raised there and attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. Dr. Travis completed his Doctorate of Medicine(MD) during World War II. He served as an active duty Senior Medical Doctor aboard ship in the Pacific theater for the U.S. Navy until 1948. In 1951, he began his Obstetrics and Gynocology practice in Cheyenne, retiring in 1982. In keeping with his mission to save lives in WWII, Dr. Travis was a pro-life supporter of human life in the womb. To this end he enabled many wonderful babies the chance to find their way to loving families. Dr. Travis also provided his Obstetric and Gynocology services at little or no charge to patients who couldn't afford to pay. These included free deliveries of babies on many occasions, including pre- and post-delivery care and house calls, when needed. Free. Janet, his wife, also helped in this effort.
Bane and Janet Travis were happily married for 55 years, and counting. They had five children and five grandchildren, altogether. Dr. Travis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janet L.Travis; his children, Maria (Gerald) Messick; Jeffrey K. Travis; Deborah (Jeff) Graham; and grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Andrew and Mary Graham; and grandson Mitchell Bane Travis and daughter-in law Monica (David B.) Travis. He was preceded in death by his sons, James L. Travis and David B. Travis, and his parents.
Outside of Medicine, Dr.Travis had many, varied activities that he enjoyed. Since grade school, he shot pistols competitively and won matches nationwide, including at Camp Perry. He also sculpted wooden horses, ducks and rifles from a young age. As a teen, he became an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. In addition, Dr. Travis was an award-winning wildlife photographer, marble sculptor, and watercolorist. Dr. Travis was a private pilot and would graciously fly his patients home after hospitalization. He also enjoyed traveling the nation in his motorhome with is wife, Janet, mostly to practice his previously mentioned hobbies.
Dr. Travis was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church(LCMS). He was a lifetime member of the Cheyenne Rifle & Pistol Club, the National Rifle Association, Boy Scouts of America.
A service will be held on Friday August 12, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cheyenne with military honors at the interment at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens. Online family tributes can be sent to
