Arlene Dew departed this earth for her Heavenly Home on October 9. 2014 , at the age of 83. She received loving care at the Life Care Center of Cheyenne during the waning years of her life.
Born in Valentine, Nebraska, Arlene was the eldest daughter of George and Mildred Schmidt. She grew up with her parents and five siblings on a farm in rural South Dakota. She graduated from Winner High School in South Dakota in 1949. After graduation, Arlene was employed by the Cherry County Treasurer’s Office in Valentine, Nebraska. Her favorite sports were baseball and football. Arlene was also a proficient bowler and enjoyed participating in local leagues and regional competitions.
Arlene married Bill Dew on June 4, 1950, and they began their life together as inseparable partners, first ranching south of Mission, South Dakota. Arlene was known for her dedication to service to others, which she showed by her tireless care of family, ranch hands, friends, and neighbors. She provided meals and board to those who needed them, and her compassionate heart endeared her to many. She was active in women’s organizations of the Lutheran Church, and she held offices in Ladies Aid and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society. She was an agent of needed change as a school board member for Todd County High School. After she and Bill relocated to Broken Bow, Nebraska, Arlene was active in church and community groups including the American Cancer Society and Toastmasters while she worked for Tri-County Bank, BD Industries, and the local Senior Center. In 2001, Arlene and Bill retired to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Friends and neighbors knew Arlene as someone who could be counted on in times of need, and as a person who was always willing to go the extra mile. She was renowned for her superb culinary skills, her willingness to be of service to others and her courage as a voice for social change.
Arlene is survived by her husband, Bill Dew, Cheyenne, Wyoming; daughters, Charlene Dew, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Linda Hengst and husband Gary, Rowlette, Texas, Kristi Dew, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Jan Davis and husband Mike, Cheyenne, Wyoming, and son, Will Dew and wife, Fonda Barkel, Chelsea, Michigan; sister, Lois Lien, Valentine, Nebraska; Grandchildren, Chad Lower and wife Amy, Courtney Martinez and husband Jose, Trevor Harris and wife Andrea, Matthew Harris, Kailie Harris, and great-grandchildren, John and Lucas Harris, Dalton Van Meter, and Kyler, Kolton and Kelsey Lurz.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.
Services will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m., at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4776 Mountain Road. Interment will follow in Valentine, Nebraska.
