On Monday September 12, 2016, Alton Leroy Cross, Sr. joined his sweetie Dorothy in Heaven. Budge, as his friends and family called him, was born October 1, 1932, in Boyes, Montana. He graduated from Central High School in Cheyenne, WY in 1950 and joined the United States Marine Corps. shortly after that.
Alton served in the Korean War where he was awarded two Purple Hearts. After his recovery, he returned to Wyoming and worked for the Great Western Sugar Company and then the Wyoming Highway Department retiring in 1988.
The highlight of his life was the love he shared with his wife Dorothy. They met in 1957 and were married on June 20, 1959. Together they had four children Alton “Sonny” Cross Jr. (wife Polly), Teresa Cross, Todd Cross, and Tricia Flores (husband Greg). He loved and cared for his wife with a patience and sensitivity unmatched by any. His example of tenderness and caring will forever be remembered.
Budge’s family knew him as a strong, independent, loving man who was always there when needed. He was there to help fix a car, make home improvements, teach something new, tell a story, go hunting, fishing or camping, or just go to the park and fly a kite. Everyone knew he loved taking care of and spending time with his family and friends.
Alton was preceded in death by his loving wife, two granddaughters, his parents, and three siblings. He is survived by four children, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, three sisters, and many friends and family members who loved and respected this amazing man. The family would like to thank the VA staff and volunteers who took amazing care of Alton in his final weeks here on earth. The time and love given to him were of great comfort.
Alton would not want us to come together and mourn, but rather, come together and celebrate a life that was so full of love and laughter. Please join the family at Cheyenne Moose Lodge September 23rd from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Toys for Tots to honor Budge’s tie to the Marines and love of making others smile.
