Albert Grant Mann

September 29, 1922 — November 23, 2022

Albert Grant Mann, of Cheyenne, passed from this life at the age of 100, on November 23, 2022 at Davis Hospice Center. He was known as Al by family and friends.

Al Mann was born on September 29, 1922 in Oak Park, Illinois to Frank W. and Martha Mae Mann. The family moved to Cheyenne when he was a young boy.

Al was a World War II Army veteran serving in the 37th Field Artillery Battalion. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day plus one. He received a purple heart after seeing action in France.

Al worked for United Airlines in Cheyenne after the war as an instrument technician. This is where he met Joy Forester, also of Cheyenne, where she worked as a supply department supervisor. They were married on May 4, 1946.

Al and Joy lived in Cheyenne, South San Francisco, and Denver before returning and settling in Cheyenne. Joy was a stay-at-home Mother raising their four children and Al worked as a machinist for Ideal Aerosmith and then an instrument technician for the U.S. National Geodetic Survey until retiring in 1990.

Al Mann was always busy. He had a penchant for projects and happiest when working around the yard or in his workshop. The outdoors called to him and he was at home there. He loved gardening, hunting, brandings, ice fishing and, camping. He was dedicated to his friends and spent many hours helping those who he knew, especially during their senior years. In 2010, he traveled to Washington, DC with the Wyoming Honor Flight to the WWII Memorial to honor the fallen.

Al Mann was a man who loved a good joke and was happiest if there was something humorous going on or being said. He was a humble man, always self-deprecating, enjoyed a good ribbing and able to laugh at himself. He could and would joke with most everyone and usually could bring a smile to those he encountered.

Al was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, who passed November 8, 2013, his parents, his brother (Bill), sister-in-law (Marge), and all his in-law siblings.

He is survived by his children: Steve Mankowski, Phyllis Mann, Curt (Susan) Mann, Tina (Greg) Yarber, 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A joint memorial service for Al and Joy Mann will be held at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel on January 7, 2023 at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Cheyenne Animal Shelter or Davis Hospice Center.
